you are correct, it is used as a cudgel. 'condemning Hamas' is the 'expected behavior' for most to 'show you are a good person' . In the article, I was thinking mostly as if you are making posts etc on social media. So starting with 'i don't condemn hamas' is a really tough starting point and potentially hazardous to employment. There are plenty of other, better (IMO) starting points, personally, i feel discussions of Hamas can be held after the genocide is stopped. If someone asks in a comment i usually just ignore them. As you pointed out, people aren't actually interested in the response, they want to distract from the ongoing genocide.
